Das Lehr- und Forschungsgebiet „Politische Systeme“ stellt einen elementaren Teilbereich der Politikwissenschaft – Analyse und Vergleich von Regierungs- und politischen Systemen – dar. Im Fokus im Teilbereich am IPW stehen das politische System der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, weitere demokratische Staaten insbesondere in Nordamerika und Europa sowie das politische System der Europäischen Union. Zu den inhaltlichen Gegenständen im Teilgebiet Politischer Systeme gehören, neben der allgemeinen Analyse politischer Systeme samt ihrer Verfassungen, Gewaltenteilung, und Grundstrukturen der Staatsorganisation, auch Institutionen und Entscheidungsfindungsprozesse, Staatstätigkeit und Governance und Regieren in Mehrebenensystemen, sowie Institutionen und Verfahren demokratischer  Legitimation, Partizipation und Repräsentation. Dabei stellen Herausforderungen der Demokratie unter komplexen und sich wandelnden Bedingungen ein besonders wichtiges Anliegen in Lehre und Forschung dar.

The teaching and research area „Political Systems“ represents one of the main subdisciplines – analysis and comparison of governments and political systems – in political science. Particular focus in this area at the Institute of Political Science lies with the political system of the Federal Republic of Germany, further democratic states especially in North America and Europe as well as the political system of the European Union. The topics of key interest als include: the general analysis of political systems, their constitutions, division of powers and basic structures of organizing the state; but also institutions and decision-making processes, public policy and governance, governing in multilevel systems, as well as institutions and procedures of democratic legitimation, participation and representation. Moreover, an overarching interest in teaching and research concerns democratic challenges under complex and changing conditions.
